Agents that control the local immune reaction to the skin are known as topical immunomodulators. These modulators can consist of immunosuppression and immunostimulation. Generally the agents that are used are interleukin 12, tumour necrosis factor-A, imiquimod and interferon. Immunomodulators are also used for further dermatological issues like immune disorders of the skin, psoriasis, atopic eczema and vitiligo.
Imiquimod is FDA approved in America for artificial basal cell carcinoma, actinic keratosis and condyloma acuminata. It has been used to treat plantar warts but it is costly compared to other topical treatments. Imiquimodin not approved in the UK for use on feet however it works by creating an anti-viral reaction by adapting specific cytokines to eliminate HPV.
